Confidence in the Bible: from self to God

Verses about “self confidence” in the Bible are usually about confidence in God. This is a deliberate shift. Scripture rarely tells people to believe in their own abilities; it more often points to a steadier base: who God made you to be, and who stands with you. For many believers that is freeing, because it does not depend on succeeding every time.

Quotes are short and mainly from the King James Version (KJV), a public-domain translation.

Verses about who you are

Psalm 139:14. “I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” The psalm speaks of God knowing and shaping a person before birth. Many readers find in it a basis for worth that does not depend on performance.

Ephesians 2:10. “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works.” The word “workmanship” suggests something crafted. The verse comes right after a reminder that salvation is by grace, not earned.

Romans 8:37. “Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.” It follows a list of hardships, and ends with the assurance that nothing can separate believers from God’s love.

1 Peter 2:9 calls believers a chosen generation. This line of thought is part of what Christians mean by identity in Christ. For more, see our identity in Christ Bible study questions.

Verses about confident courage

Proverbs 3:26. “For the LORD shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken.” The source of confidence is named.

Hebrews 10:35. “Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward.” It was written to Christians under pressure who were tempted to give up.

1 John 5:14. “This is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us.” Confidence here is about prayer.

2 Timothy 1:7. “God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” It was written to a younger leader who may have felt timid.

Joshua 1:9. “Be strong and of a good courage.” See also KJV Bible verses about strength in hard times.

What is Philippians 4:13 saying?

“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” This is one of the most quoted verses in the Bible. In context, Paul has just said he has learned to be content when he has little and when he has plenty (verses 11-12). Most commentators therefore read “all things” as everything God calls him to endure or do, rather than every personal ambition. It is a statement of reliance, which is why it belongs in a discussion of God-confidence.

What is John 16:33 saying?

“In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” Jesus speaks to his disciples before his arrest. He admits trouble will come, and offers peace “in me.” The confidence offered is not that life will be easy, but that Christ has already prevailed.

What is Proverbs 4:23 saying?

“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” In biblical usage, the heart is the center of thought and will. Many readers take this as advice to guard what you let shape your inner life, including the voices that tell you that you are not enough. It can pair well with the thought-renewing verses in Bible verses for mental strength.

Balancing confidence and humility

Scripture holds two things together. Jeremiah 9:23-24 warns against boasting in wisdom or strength, and says to boast in knowing the LORD. Paul writes, “Not that we are sufficient of ourselves… but our sufficiency is of God” (2 Corinthians 3:5). Yet the Bible also calls believers to speak and act boldly. Christians describe this as humble confidence: you do not need to prove yourself, so you can act freely. Different traditions emphasize different sides, but both are present.

Practical steps

  • Choose one identity verse, such as Psalm 139:14, and read it each morning.
  • When a critical thought comes, ask whether it matches what scripture says about you.
  • Take a small step you have been avoiding, and ask God for help.
  • Talk with a trusted friend. Our page on strength in numbers explains why.
  • If low self-worth feels heavy or constant, it is wise to speak with a licensed counselor or doctor too. If you ever feel like harming yourself, contact local emergency services, or in the US call or text 988.
  • Read Bible verses about trusting God for the foundation under all of these.
