The main verse: Ephesians 5:25

The verse most often cited for husbands is Ephesians 5:25: “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it” (KJV). The standard is Christ’s self-giving love, which is a high bar. It is not about being served or being in charge but about giving oneself for the good of another.

Verses for husbands

Ephesians 5:28-29. Husbands are to love their wives as their own bodies, nourishing and cherishing them. The emphasis is on care.

Colossians 3:19. “Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them” (KJV). The verse warns against resentment and harshness, which can quietly damage a marriage. See also Bible verses about harsh words and Bible verses about anger.

1 Peter 3:7. Husbands are to live with their wives “according to knowledge,” giving honor to them as fellow heirs of the grace of life, “that your prayers be not hindered” (KJV). This suggests that how a man treats his wife is connected to his spiritual life, and that understanding her matters.

1 Timothy 5:8. Whoever does not provide for his relatives, especially his household, has denied the faith. This is commonly read as a call to responsible care, which can include financial provision, but also presence and support.

Genesis 2:24. A man leaves his parents and is joined to his wife. Many read this as a call to put the marriage first among human relationships.

Proverbs 5:18-19. The writer encourages a man to rejoice in the wife of his youth and to remain faithful. See also the sanctity of marriage in the Bible.

Proverbs 18:22. “Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the LORD” (KJV).

Deuteronomy 24:5. A newly married man was to be free from certain duties for a year “to cheer up his wife” (a common translation of the Hebrew). It reflects concern for the early days of a marriage.

Proverbs 17:17

Proverbs 17:17 says “A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity” (KJV). It is not directed at husbands specifically, but readers often apply it to marriage: loyalty that continues when things are hard. A husband who aims to be his wife’s close friend is following the spirit of the verse.

Qualities of a good husband

Scripture does not give a single list, but the verses above point toward:

  • Sacrificial love (Ephesians 5:25)
  • Gentleness, not bitterness (Colossians 3:19)
  • Understanding and honor (1 Peter 3:7)
  • Faithfulness (Proverbs 5; Hebrews 13:4)
  • Responsible care (1 Timothy 5:8)
  • Spiritual leadership through example, which many link to household faith (Joshua 24:15)

Headship and differing views

Ephesians 5:23 calls the husband the “head” of the wife as Christ is head of the church. Christians read this differently. Some traditions teach that the husband carries a unique leadership responsibility. Others emphasize mutual submission (Ephesians 5:21) and see “head” as sacrificial service. Both views, when held faithfully, rule out domination or harshness. Compare the perspective of wives in what the Bible says about a wife.

Building a godly marriage

  • Pray together and individually, including for your spouse.
  • Listen first. James 1:19 encourages being quick to hear and slow to speak.
  • Apologize and forgive. Ephesians 4:32 calls for kindness and forgiveness.
  • Protect the marriage. Be careful with time, attention and boundaries.
  • Care for the home. Share responsibilities in ways that fit your family.
  • Keep learning. Consider a mentor couple, a Bible study group or marriage counseling.

Fathers can also read fatherhood in the Bible, and the wider household perspective appears in the importance of family unity in the Bible.

When a marriage is unsafe

Verses about husbands do not give anyone permission to control, intimidate or harm. If you or someone you know is being abused, safety comes first. Please contact local emergency services or a domestic violence helpline in your area, and speak with a trusted pastor or counselor. If a husband recognizes harmful behavior in himself, seeking help from a qualified professional is a responsible step.

Reflection

  1. Which verse challenges you most as a husband, or helps you pray for yours?
  2. What would sacrificial love look like in your home this week?
  3. How can a husband show understanding without being asked?
